BALLET FOR LIFE:

Peformed by - Bejart Ballet Lausanne.
Produced by - Rocky Oldham & Jim Beach.
Director - David Mallet.
Choreography - BEJART.
Music - QUEEN • MOZART.
Costumes - Gianni Versace

Performed by Maurice Bejart’s famous ballet company, with costumes designed by Gianni Versace, Ballet For Life is an intensely moving work which draws its inspiration from the lives of Freddie Mercury and Maurice Bejart’s former principal dancer, Jorge Donn both of whom died of AIDS.
Bejart’s score of Queen material is drawn from right across Queen’s rich catalogue, opening to It’s A Beautiful Day with the complete dance troupe appearing, as if in the clouds, behind white sheets.
The ballet conveys a series of emotions - love, fear, hope, humour and loss amongst many others. Not only are these emotions clearly interpreted but they are easy to relate to by every person.
Complete silence, at one point in the ballet, as a projection screen is dropped and film of Jorge Donn begins. The film runs to I Want To Break Free, taken from Live At Wembley 1986 and, with the combination of Freddie’s voice and Jorge Donn’s dance, the atmosphere reaches new heights. The sense is that both artists leave an indelible mark of their presence in the ballet at this point.
The ballet ends with Freddie Mercury’s voice ringing out on Queen’s The Show Must Go On. The dance closes very much as it opens with the complete dance troupe. However, by now there is a sense of unity and understanding felt by the audience, undeniably as a result of the excellence of the ballet, choreography and music.

MUSIC:

The music is primarily of Queen’s own recorded works, both live and studio tracks, interspersed with a number of Mozart pieces blending perfectly into the score. The ballet is about people who died too early, the synergy therefore continuing as Mozart also died young at thirty-five, ten years younger then Freddie Mercury and Jorge Donn who died at forty-five.
Says Begirt: “Freddie Mercury and Jorge Donn died at the same age. Both had very different personalities, but the same passion for life and extrovert performance. I felt there was a connection between them.”

ABOUT BEJART’S BALLETS:

“My ballets are first encounters..with a piece of music, with life, death, love..with people whose past and work are embodied in me, just like the dancer - which I no longer am - who each time embodies characters that go beyond him. Immediate love for Queen’s music. Imagination, violence, humour, love. Everything is there.”

BEJART ON QUEEN:

“I love them, they are inspiration for me, they guide me and from time to time in this ‘no man’s land’ where we will all go one day, I’m sure Freddie Mercury plays piano with Mozart. A ballet about youth and hope, since I am a hopeless optimist and believe that in spite of everything, ‘the show must go on’ like Queen sings it.”

PMI PRESS RELEASE:

Directed by French ballet legend Maurice Bejart with costumes designed by Gianni Versace, Ballet For Life was first performedin the Theatre de Challot, Paris, in January 1997 in the presence of Madame Chirac, Elton John and the three surviving members of Queen, John Deacon, Brian May and Roger Taylor. Since then, the ballet (also known as ‘Le Presbytere n’a rien perdu de son charme ni le jardin de son eclat’) continues to tour extensively around the world.
Performed by Maurice Bejart’s famous ballet company, the Bejart Ballet of Lausanne, Ballet For Life is an intensely moving work which draws its inspiration from the lives of Freddie Mercury and Maurice Bejart’s former principal dancer, Jorge Donn, both of whom died of AIDS.
Bejart’s score of Queen material is drawn from right across Queen’s rich catalogue, both live and studio tracks. Four Mozart pieces are interspersed throughout the performance, blending perfectly, enhancing the rich textures of the ballet.
The ballet was filmed in the Theatre Metropole, Lausanne, Switzerland, in June 1997, to yet again, a packed audience who, breaking tradition, applauded throughout the performance; feelings running high at all times as the ballet’s own emotions are so easily conveyed.
Maurice Bejart’s long standing friend, Gianni Versace was tragically killed in Miami shortly after the filming in Lausanne. Sadly, this project, a rare departure into the world of ballet for Versace, proved to be one of his last.
On Sunday, 30 November, in its weekly programme ‘Musiques au coeur’ , France 2 pay homage to Bejart, one of France’s and the worlds most loved Choreographers, and broadcast the filmed performance as a prelude to International AIDS day, 1 December.
The Ballet For Life film is directed by David mallet, known specifically for directing live performance concerts of such megastars as Tina Turner, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and currently Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.
In addition to the filmed performance, ‘The Making Of Ballet For Life’ provides a unique half hour behind the scenes view of the ballet in production. Together with interviews from Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen, Maurice Bejart and leading members of the Bejart Ballet of Lausanne explain their roles and the depth of work and their committment in bringing the ballet to the stage.
